From the Drennan Collection: The 1936 Vanderbilt Cup Race Awards Ceremony

Yesterday, I described the discovery of a treasure box of Long Island auto racing photos by the Cradle of Aviation Museum. Among the events covered by photographer John Drennan was the awards ceremony for the 1936 Vanderbilt Cup Race winner Tazio Nuvolari. I believe these photos have never been previously published .

As described in this New York Times article, the awards ceremony was held one day after the race on October 13, 1936 at the Ambassador Hotel in New York City. In this photo, Tazio Nuvolari was greeted by 22-year old George Vanderbilt III and Roosevelt Raceway officials. Note the diorama of the 1936 course.

In this photo, Eddie Rickenbacker gave Tazio Nuvolari a commemorative watch. Rickenbacker, a veteran Vanderbilt Cup Race driver and World War I "Ace of Aces", was a director of the Roosevelt Raceway.

Here, George P. Marshall, the president of Roosevelt Raceway, congratulates Jean-Pierre Wimille for his second-place finish. Marshall was also the owner of the NFL Washington Redskins.

I think you’ll find you’ve posted all those pictures reversed! Either that, or there’s some very creative tailoring going on!

I look forward to seeing the rest.
