A Salute to Our Veterans & Garden City News: Long Island Motor Parkway: The Role of Garden City

Rikki Massand has written an article on the Garden City section of the Motor Parkway and this Thursday's  Long Island Motor Parkway Preservation's meeting in Bethpage. The article was published in both the Garden City News (pages 44-45)and  the Bethpage Newsgram (pages 6-7).

Enjoy,

Thank you Veterans for your service! It was a great day at the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach today. The Thunderbirds are amazing!

The presentation will feature rare photos of the construction of the Motor Parkway from the Garden City Archives and 1907 Motor Parkway surveys.

Along its 44-mile stretch from New York City grounds into Long Island, thousands of concrete posts used as bollards and barriers for cars were installed. Kroplick says the portion of the Parkway in Garden City contains about 20 of the posts.

From its start with eight members in February of 2011, today the Long Island Motor Parkway Preservation Society has grown to over 450 members. "No fees are required ..just energy and dedication."

Lee Chambers:

I suppose everyone has their favorite section of the LIMP.  Growing up on Mitchel Field and having spent an inordinate amount of my teenage years at Roosevelt Field, it should come as no surprise that my favorite section is between Clinton Road in Garden City, traversing across the Ring Road south of Macy’s, paralleling Stewart Ave. and continuing eastward to Merrick Ave. in East Meadow.

How I wish I could attend your presentation this Thursday in Bethpage!  (Hard to do from 3,000 miles away).  I will be greatly looking forward to seeing details of it in next weekend’s email blast.
