Henry Austin Clark Jr.‘s 1911 Mercer Raceabout

One of Henry Austin Clark jr's favorite cars, and one of his earliest acquisitions was his 1911 Mercer T-head Raceabout

Greg O.

Frequently seen on many of the Long Island Automobile Museum's postcards was one of Henry Austin Clark's favorite cars. His 1911 Mercer Raceabout with the famous Mercer T-head designed by Long Islander, Finlay Robertson Porter. Porter went on to form F.R.P. automobiles in Port Jefferson.

Light, fast and fun. it's no wonder why it was Clark's favorite and found on so many postcards.

Another museum card, this time Henry Austin Clark's Mercer is paired up with his son, James Hunter Clark's 1911 Simplex in the Hamptons.

On the back is a personalized note James wrote to his dad.

Of all the cars to come and go throughout Henry Austin Clark's lifetime, the Mercer always stayed. It even stayed with the family long after Clark's death.

Finally, in 2014, Clark's son Hal, decided it was time to let the car go. It was sold at RM/Sotheby's auction for 2.5 million.

In this 4 1/2-minute video, Hal drives and speaks about his father's Mercer.
