1909 Vanderbilt Cup Race
The extension of the Motor Parkway to Jericho Turnpike was promoted on the Officials Stand/Press Box at the 1909 Vanderbilt Cup Race. That's the Alco Black Beast crossing the finish line. One gentleman apparently bet on the right car.

Looking north, the bridge can be seen under construction.
The Jericho Turnpike Lodge (actually a ticket kiosk) opened in May1910.

The bridge was designated as a H.W. (Highway) bridge, meaning the Motor Parkway went under road.
1929 Photo
As seen here in 1929, a new lodge was built and moved to this location to accommodate an initial widening of Jericho Turnpike and the new porte-cochere.

Current View
Although the bridge is long gone and the Motor Parkway filled in, the Jericho Turnpike building and utility pole remain.

O.K., LI’ers; somebody go check the ID tags on that utility pole! Sam, III
That building in the last two photos was owned by a classic car collector , it contained his car transmission business . Gene Beardslee lived in Brookville and was a great guy, and real “hands on” car collector. He had some magnificent classic cars from the 1930s - Cord, a magnificent Cadillac V16 limousine, Packards etc. and had local CCCA members visit his home to see his cars and have some refreshments. It was a great loss to us all when he passed away.
Thanks for the work you put into this site. It is very helpful.Would it be possbile for you to also list the longitude and latitude of cameras with the location? It would be a great benefit for anyone wanting to add them into their GPS units.I use IGO primo and have used your site for the locations then itouchmap to get the lat and long of the location to add to the GPS.Thanks againNuzz
