Kroplick to speak at Landmark Society

The Roslyn Landmark Society will continue its monthly lecture series with a presentation by noted local author Howard Kroplick on his new book, “North Hempstead.” The lecture and book signing will take place at 7:45pm on February 26, 2014 at the Atria of Roslyn on 99 Landing Road.  The lecture is free to the public. 

“North Hempstead” is a pictorial history of the town and the people, places and landmarks that created and defined its identity. The book begins with the 1654 real estate treaty with the Algonquian people and covers up to current time. The visually stunning presentation will feature many of the rare and vintage images from the book including grand private residences, notable persons of the era, historic documents and maps which have been culled from town and village archives, museums, libraries, schools and private collections, some dating back to the seventeenth-century. Kroplick will also discuss how early advances in trains, automobiles, parkways and seaplanes dramatically transformed the towns of North Hempstead from farm and estate communities into the sprawling, affluent suburb it is today.

Special attention will be paid to the heart of North Hempstead, the historic Gold Coast, with its spectacular homes and their celebrated owners; a mix of New York’s aristocracy including the Vanderbilt, Whitney, Mackay and Guggenheim families; notable authors such as F. Scott Fitzgerald and William Cullen Bryant; musicians John Philip Sousa and George M. Cohan and the inimitable comedian, Groucho Marx.

“North Hempstead” celebrates the 400th anniversary of the European discovery of the Long Island Sound and the area which became the Town of North Hempstead.  Kroplick hopes that the book “will further document the history, growth and evolution of the town into one of the “Best Places to Live in America.”

Kroplick is a Roslyn Landmark Society trustee, historian for the Town of North Hempstead and a member of the town’s Historic Landmark Preservation Commission. “North Hempstead” is Kroplick’s third book with local history publisher, Arcadia Publishing. His two previously-published titles include “The Vanderbilt Cup Races of Long Island” and “The Long Island Motor Parkway,” which he co-authored.

All author proceeds from the book signing will be donated to the Roslyn Landmark Society. The lecture and parking is free. Atria of Roslyn is located at 99 Landing Road in Roslyn, NY.
