Saturday Search: A 1905 Vanderbilt Cup Race Wooden Post?

A New Jersey viewer has forwarded this photo of wooden post that was found in his father's attic. The post has markings that indicate it may be from the 1905 Vanderbilt Cup Race.

Can you help identify it?

Enjoy,

Howard Kroplick

"Vanderbilt Cup Race" is carved into the post. A device was attached to the post.

The Vanderbilt Cup Race trophy can be seen on the post. Difficult to read below the cup is "1905".

This is the device taken apart.

The top piece of the device reads "Continental ST". For the 1905 Vanderbilt Cup Race, all the Mercedes entries used Continental tires.

The “device” appears to be a tire valve stem.  Perhaps the post was part of a Continental Tire and Repair Station along the course?

May be a valve installation tool.

Your absolutely right Rob. A breakdown of an older fashioned tire valve stem, as laid out in parts on the table.
