1997 Exhibit and Film “Old 16- An American Legend”


After obtaining Old 16 from Jerry Helck in 1997, the Henry Ford Museum developed a multimedia exhibit to display the 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Race winner. The elaborate exhibit included a simulation of the Long Island Motor Parkway, display cases, three figures dressed in 1908 period race clothing and a 9-monitor video wall.



 

The artifacts included in the 1997 exhibit were:

-The Vanderbilt Cup, on loan frim Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History

-A 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Race pennant

-A helmut and gloves like those worn by a driver during the race

-A Locomobile scrapbook of all the newspaper clippings of the race



 

A major feature of the exhibit was a film by Academy Award winning producer Sue Marx telling the Old 16 story. Narrated by Oscar winner and racing enthusiast Paul Newman, the film incorporated historic race footage of the 1904 Vanderbilt Cup Race and 1997 footage of Old 16 being driven around Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan.

I too would love to watch the whole film.  What a great way to commemorate Long Island’s heritage in motorsports.  Now if we could just get a road racing circuit built on the Calverton property we could bring our history full circle!  Actually, let’s not make that a circle, lets make it a road course!  😊

I had the pleasure of meeting you and contributing a pic of the
Horace Harding Blvd overpass remnants. I viewed this present-
ation of the “old Ford no. 16 racecar and must compliment you     on the work you do so authoritatively and enthusiastically on this and your weekly emails, a tribute to Long Island History.
