In another VanderbiltCupRaces.com exclusive, this image may be the only photo showing the #17 Simplex breaking down at the Hempstead Control near the end of the 1904 Vanderbilt Cup Race.

Enjoy,

Holes were cut in the frame of the Simplex prior to the race in order to make the weight requirements. Almost immediately the car began collapsing. In this photo, the Simplex had lost its rear left tire as it approached the Hempstead Control on Fulton Street.

The gasoline filling setup for the Fiat cars.

Supply men awaiting action and an excited spectator.

A family used their car as a viewing stand.

From Tom C:

Your website is absolutely terrific!

Thanks for including me.

Even though I haven’t lived on Long Island for 27 years, I still love the place and appreciate it’s place in auto racing history.

I saw my first race at Islip Speedway as a Cub Scout.

Thank you.  I look forward to reading more.
