Video of the Week: The Vanderbilt Museum presents Moments in History: The Alva, A Ship for Seven Seas

The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum created this 4-minute video on Alva, Willie K's largest yacht.

Enjoy,

Howard Kroplick

William K. Vanderbilt II, a well-known yachtsman and scientific explorer, spent much of his life at sea. The custom-built Alva, 264-feet long, was his largest and grandest yacht– a marvel in its time. In it, he and his wife, a few friends, and a large crew circumnavigated the globe in 1931-32. Along the way, he collected countless marine and natural-history specimens and cultural artifacts for his growing museum. This video follows the story of the Alva, from her creation to her eventual sinking.

While I’ve known of the yacht, it’s still a great story, nice piece of film, and of Long Island history.
