Larry Synder has forwarded photos from his family albums of his great-uncle Joe Dawson who participated in the 1910 Vanderbilt Cup Race and won the 1912 Indy 500 Races.

Born in 1889 in Odon, Indiana, Joe Dawson competed in the the 1910 Vanderbilt Cup Race and three Indy 500 Races (1911, 1912 and 1914). Joe Dawson finished second in the 1910 Vanderbilt Cup Race losing by only 25 seconds and won the 1912 Indy 500 Race. He was considered the hero of the 1910 Vanderbilt Cup Race for stopping to

A large field of 30 cars raced in the 1910 Vanderbilt Cup Race held on October 1, 1910. The race was run on the same course as in 1909- a total of 12.64 miles including 5.15 miles of the Long Island Motor Parkway. The winner needed to complete 22 laps of the course for a total of 278.08
