Ray Harroun was the winner of the first Indy 500 Race driving a Marmon to victory in 1911. He also won the 1909 Wheatley Sweepstakes Race that was held in conjuction with the 1909 Vanderbilt Cup Race and finished 21st in a larger Marmon at the 1910 Vanderbilt Cup Race.

During the 1909 Vanderbilt Cup Race, two other sweepstakes races (the Massapequa Sweepstakes and the Wheatley Hills Sweepstakes ) were run simultaneously for commercially available stock cars. The Wheatley Sweepstakes had only four entrants for the "sub-class 3" stock cars with engines 231 to 300 cubic inches. The winner received a prize of $1,000.

As part of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Indy 500, last year race fans aroung the world selected "The Greatest 33" drivers in Indianapolis 500 history. #25 was Ray Harroun who won the 1911 Indy 500, the 1909 Wheatley Sweepstakes and finished 21st in the 1910 Vanderbilt Cup Race.

A large field of 30 cars raced in the 1910 Vanderbilt Cup Race held on October 1, 1910. The race was run on the same course as in 1909- a total of 12.64 miles including 5.15 miles of the Long Island Motor Parkway. The winner needed to complete 22 laps of the course for a total of 278.08
